Create-A-Day: your daily dose of creativity #187 — The Creative Call

Standard

National Book MonthFor National Book Month, let us continuing our book focus for the rest of September and October . . .

Creative CallMany would consider The Creative Call by Janice Elsheimer a must-read for artists and creatives. According to one Amazon reviewer, “As a painter who had hit a dry spell . . . The Creative Call has helped me to rethink the whole process of ‘art making.’ I now see each painting as a gift, a ‘love note’ from God. I also see both the process and the finished work as an act of service, a means of worship.” Wow! That’s quite a testimony!

National Book MonthOctober is National Book Month, so I’ll be posting links to books for creatives, artists and worshipers the rest of September and throughout October!

AltarNew York Times Best Seller An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor takes spirituality out of the box. I love the way she suggests very non-traditional, creative ways to encounter God. As an artist or creative, her book will leave you with new ways to develop your own spiritual practices to commune and worship God.

31 Days of Living Art is a blog series from Emily P. Freeman, which includes 31 posts (originally planned for the month of October but could be done anytime). These wonderful posts are designed to help you realize the artist within you, the artist God created you to be!

It was also designed to go along with Emily’s book, A Million Little Ways. And speaking of books… October is National Book Month so I’ve been saving all the book resources to feature in October. Trouble is, there’s more books than days! That’s a great trouble to have though because that means there are many great resources for your creative library. So the book feature starts tomorrow. By the end of October we’ll have over 35 books for creatives, artists and worshipers!! So dust off your shelves and get ready to load them up with books all written with YOU, God’s creative gift to the world, in mind! Continue reading

I want to direct you to Amazing Art, a blog post by Dave Weiss. It is indeed “amazing” and wait until you find out about the artist.

The picture you see here is only a small portion of the artwork, constructed of fiber, nails and plywood. You can see the entire piece by clicking the link above.

It was hung at a church that used the walls of its worship space as a gallery for the members’ artwork. What a great idea! We turned our lobby area into an art show one year for Easter. It was a wonderful way to challenge our artists to create around a theme (we used the theme “Redemption”), and a great way to display their work for our members to see! Continue reading

Brenda Angel with The Lamb of God sculpture

Today’s creative inspiration is a video of Brenda Angel, an untrained artist who was determined to create a 16-foot sculpture of Christ on the cross. Her original inspiration for this project was through a dream. She literally dreamed it and then made it into reality through her faith in God to equip her for this task. The sculpture is amazing! Her determination to accomplish the task despite her lack of train is incredible! Definitely worth the watch! The statue is on traveling exhibition. You can connect with Brenda Angel on Facebook to see where the exhibit will be next. Continue reading

Create-A-Day: your daily dose of creativity #104 — Embodied Prayer

Standard

Embodied PrayerI consider Embodied Prayer: Towards Wholeness of Body, Mind and Soul by Celeste Snowber a must-read for any creative Christian who uses his or her body in their art form (dancers, actors, actresses, etc) and for those interested in praying through movement.

For many of us, we check our bodies at the doors of our churches like a coat-check at a restaurant. We engage our minds and our hearts in worship, but our bodies are in exile in the pew. We sit quietly and pray when our bodies long to reach out to Him who hears the words we can and cannot say. As a very kinetically-oriented person, this book awakened my mind to the Hebraic understanding of the body; my soul to the knowledge that I am a temple of the Holy Spirit; my heart to an awareness of God’s joy as I worship Him through movement; and my body to the possibilities in all of this!
