AltarNew York Times Best Seller An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor takes spirituality out of the box. I love the way she suggests very non-traditional, creative ways to encounter God. As an artist or creative, her book will leave you with new ways to develop your own spiritual practices to commune and worship God.

Create-A-Day: your daily dose of creativity #181 — Walking on Water

Standard

National Book MonthOctober is National Book Month so for the rest of September and throughout October we’ll be focusing on books for creatives and artists.

Many of you have read Madeleine L’Engle’s popular 1980 book entitled Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith & Art many years ago. But of course, I do want to recommend it, just in case you are new to this “creative” or “artistic” journey. I would be remiss if I didn’t point it out.

There is so much to be gleaned Walkingfrom this treasure from an incredibly prolific and creative writer.

“But unless we are creators we are not fully alive. What do I mean by creators? Not only artists, whose acts of creation are the obvious ones of working with paint of clay or words. Creativity is a way of living life, no matter our vocation or how we earn our living. Creativity is not limited to the arts, or having some kind of important career.” ~ Madeleine L’Engle

Trouble is, there’s more books than days! That’s a great trouble to have though because that means there are many great resources for your creative library. So the book feature starts tomorrow. By the end of October we’ll have over 35 books for creatives, artists and worshipers!! So dust off your shelves and get ready to load them up with books all written with YOU, God’s creative gift to the world, in mind! Continue reading

I don’t necessarily consider myself a photographer but I do like to capture moments. And who doesn’t want to capture those moments in an eye-pleasing way?

Today’s feature is a short and simple article on compositional balance in photography. It was posted by PI Photography and Fine Art (PIPA): a site where you can find galleries of wonderful nature-inspired photographs. Head on over to find out how to improve your images with balance, and while you’re there check out the Portfolios and Galleries to “find the extraordinary in the ordinary.”

If you want to keep exploring, PIPA also posted another article recently called Photography Mistakes: Stop Screwing Up Your Shots with professional photographer Joshua Cripps. This one includes an entertaining video to help you stop making “stupid” mistakes! Great tips and some chuckles for free!! Enjoy!

There are some images that live in your memory forever. Consider this image:

Vietnam

Today I want to refer you to a CNN article about her journey from this terrifying moment of excruciating pain to a beautiful place of healing and forgiveness. It’s a remarkable story. I encourage you to read the entire article and watch both videos. I want to direct you to Amazing Art, a blog post by Dave Weiss. It is indeed “amazing” and wait until you find out about the artist.

The picture you see here is only a small portion of the artwork, constructed of fiber, nails and plywood. You can see the entire piece by clicking the link above.

It was hung at a church that used the walls of its worship space as a gallery for the members’ artwork. What a great idea! We turned our lobby area into an art show one year for Easter. It was a wonderful way to challenge our artists to create around a theme (we used the theme “Redemption”), and a great way to display their work for our members to see! Continue reading

Create-A-Day: your daily dose of creativity #172 — Healing Power of Art

Today I want to connect you to a powerful article entitled The Healing Power of Art by Dr. Dianne B. Collard. She quickly admits she is not an artist but her story of healing through the arts leads her to implore believer-artists to keep creating:

“Please,” I concluded, “as a non-artist believer, I beg you: Do not stop engaging in your art. Don’t stop exercising your creative gifts. Especially don’t abandon the church—no matter how hard it might be. The world needs your gift, the church needs it, but most of all, I—a non-artist sister in Christ—desperately need it.”
