Go into nature…
…and let it teach you.
Come forth into the light of things, let Nature be your teacher.
William WordsworthBelieve one who knows: you will find something greater in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters.
Saint Bernard de ClairvauxWhenever I have found myself stuck in the ways I relate to things, I return to nature. It is my principal teacher, and I try to open my whole being to what it has to say.

Today I found this sweet, little, white violet. As I examined it, I was struck by the tiny purple lines within. As I looked at the single, purple lines reaching right and left, and the grouping of lines that fanned out below, I was struck by the image of a tiny dancer. As I held it carefully, its petals moved with the whisper of the wind. And then it spoke…
All of creation dances.
The tiniest of dancers swayed and twirled as the wind of God’s Spirit blew through the trees, dancing to the tune of Creation’s Song, birds singing their glorious praise. The God of All Creation dances over us with rejoicing and singing, and, if we allow ourselves the freedom, we get to join in the heavenly dance with Him.
And yet…
can you see how this little bloom is already wilting?
Disconnected from its Source, it cannot live long.
It must stay connected to be nourished,
to bloom, to live, to thrive.
I want to stay connected, Lord. Thank you for this tiny reminder to dance with you and stay connected with you.
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!
Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts (armies)!
Praise Him, sun and moon:
Praise Him, all stars of light!
Praise Him, highest heavens,
And the waters above the heavens!
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For He commanded and they were created.
He has also established them forever and ever;
He has made a decree which shall not pass away.
Praise the Lord from the earth,
Sea monsters and all deeps;
Lightning and hail, snow and fog;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His orders;
Mountains and all hills;
Fruitful trees and all cedars;
Beasts and all cattle;
Creeping things and winged birds;
Kings of the earth and all people;
Princes and all judges of the earth;
Both young men and virgins;
Old men and children.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For His name alone is exalted and supreme;
His glory and majesty are above earth and heaven.
He has lifted up a horn for His people,
Praise for all His godly ones;
For the people of Israel, a people near to Him.
Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!
Psalm 148
Getting outside is a wonderful way to practice creative, embodied prayer. As you do, open your senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, and, if you happen upon a blackberry bush or apple tree, taste. Let Creation catch your eye. Focus in on something small or zoom out to something expansive. Allow God to speak…
…and let Nature be your teacher.
